Your First Month: What Actually Happens

Nobody’s first month looks like the version described in a recruitment pitch, and pretending otherwise does new Business Builders no favours. Here is what actually tends to happen, week by week, including the week that feels like nothing is working.

Week One: Setting Up, Slower Than Expected

The first week is mostly admin. Registering properly, learning MyShop, choosing a starter product from the Shop and Share range. It rarely produces a sale in the first few days, and that is normal rather than a bad sign. Most of week one is spent learning where things live in the app and in the catalogue, not selling.

Week Two: The First Real Sales, and the First Nos

This is usually when the first sale actually happens, often to somebody already known, a neighbour, a cousin, somebody from church. It is also when the first no arrives, and the first no tends to land harder than it should, simply because it is the first one. Neither the yes nor the no from week two says much about how the following weeks will go.

Week Three: The Slump Almost Everyone Hits

Week three is the one nobody warns new Business Builders about, and it is worth naming honestly. The initial circle of easy customers has mostly been reached by now, and the next round of sales requires talking to people who are not already close contacts. This week often feels slower than week two, and it is the week where most people who quit early tend to quit. It is not a sign the business does not work. It is the point where the easy list runs out and a different skill, reaching slightly further than your immediate circle, has to start developing.

Week Four: Momentum, If the Third Week Was Pushed Through

For those who kept going through week three, week four usually brings a shift. Repeat customers from week two come back. Word starts moving on its own, somebody mentioning the Lunch Box to a friend without being asked to. This is also typically when the first Shop and Share free product is earned, if ten units of the starter product have been sold across the month.

What This Means for Setting Expectations

A slow week three is not a signal to stop. It is close to the most common pattern there is, and knowing it is coming in advance makes it considerably easier to push through than discovering it as a surprise. The Business Builders who reach month six are rarely the ones who had an unusually easy month one. They are the ones who expected week three to be hard and kept working through it anyway.

What to Actually Do in a Slow Week

  • Follow up with the two or three people from week two who showed interest but did not buy
  • Post on WhatsApp status even when it feels like nobody is watching, since most people watch quietly rather than respond immediately
  • Resist the urge to add a second starter product before the first one is selling consistently

What Month Two Usually Looks Like

Once the first month is behind her, most Business Builders find month two runs on a rhythm the first month never had. The customers who bought once tend to buy again if the follow up habit from week four continued into the new month, and the awkwardness of a first pitch has mostly worn off by then. Month two is rarely as dramatic as month one, in either direction, and that steadiness is usually the first real sign that this is becoming a business rather than an experiment.

What to Watch For if Week Three Repeats Itself

Occasionally the week three slump does not fully lift by week four, and it is worth naming that honestly rather than promising it always resolves on schedule. If the slow patch continues, the most useful next step is usually widening the circle slightly further than family and immediate neighbours, rather than working harder within the same small group that has already been reached. A slightly wider circle, reached deliberately, tends to do more than repeated effort within a circle that has already responded as much as it is going to.
