Business Builder: When someone says no

Every Business Builder hears no more often than yes, and the ones who last are not the ones who never hear it. They are the ones who know what to say back without it sounding like a script, because a real objection deserves a real answer, not a memorised line delivered at somebody. Here are the three you will hear most, and what to say to each.

I Do Not Have the Money Right Now

This is the most common one and it is also the most honest. Most people who say this mean it. The wrong response is to push past it. The right response is to acknowledge it and offer the option that actually exists for exactly this situation.

I understand completely, and that is exactly why we have layby and buy now pay later options. Would it help if I showed you how those work, so you are not choosing between this and something else that matters?

This response does two things at once. It respects that money is genuinely tight for most households in this country, and it moves the conversation toward a real solution rather than a repeated pitch.

I Need to Think About It

This one is often not really about thinking. It is about not wanting to say no directly, or not being sure yet, or needing to check with somebody else in the household first. Pushing for an answer on the spot tends to close the door rather than open it.

Of course, take the time you need. Can I check back with you in a few days, just so you are not chasing me down when you are ready?

This keeps the door open without pressure, and it gives you a genuine reason to follow up later rather than guessing whether a second message will feel like nagging.

A real objection deserves a real answer, not a memorised line delivered at somebody.

I Tried Something Like This Before and It Did Not Work

This is the hardest one, because it usually comes from a real disappointment somewhere, and dismissing it insults the person’s own experience. The better move is to ask a genuine question rather than defend the product immediately.

That is fair, and I am sorry that happened. Can I ask what specifically did not work, so I can tell you honestly whether this would be different?

Sometimes the honest answer is that it would not be different, and saying so builds more trust than any pitch could. Other times the specific problem they describe genuinely does not apply here, and being able to explain exactly why is far more convincing than a general reassurance.

What All Three Have in Common

None of these scripts try to argue somebody out of a no. They try to understand what the no actually means, because a no about money is a completely different conversation to a no about trust, and treating them the same way loses both.

  • None of them push for a decision on the spot,
  • None of them make a promise about money to get past the objection instead of dealing with it honestly.

A sale won by rushing past a real hesitation tends to come back as a return, a complaint, or a customer who never orders again, and none of those are worth the short term win.

Before Your Next Conversation

1. Know the layby and buy now pay later terms well enough to explain them in one sentence, not five.

2. Never respond to hesitation with more information. Respond with a question that finds out what the hesitation actually is.

3. If somebody says they need to think about it, agree on when you will follow up, out loud, before the conversation ends.

4. If somebody had a bad experience with something similar before, ask what happened before saying anything else.

5. Write down what was actually said after every no. Patterns in objections tell you more than any single conversation can.
